Thrilling Victory at João Pessoa Elite16 Victory for Mol and Sørum
Tokyo Olympic champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway added another remarkable chapter to their storied careers on Sunday, securing their third gold medal of the 2024 Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour season at the João Pessoa Elite16. The Beach Volley Vikings triumphed in what they described as the most spectacular match of their careers, defeating Qatari Olympic medalists Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan in a thrilling three-set final (25-27, 21-17, 19-17).
A Gold Medal Match for the Ages
The gold medal match was a rollercoaster of emotions, lasting nearly 70 minutes and featuring dramatic twists and turns. Mol and Sørum found themselves on the brink of defeat in the tie-breaker, trailing 13-10, but rallied to win 19-17, showcasing their trademark resilience and composure.
“We just kept playing one ball at a time,” Sørum said. “The conditions were windy, and every point felt crucial. We didn’t win the first set, but we fought back in the second and third. It was an incredible match, and it’s always fun to play against such a strong team like Qatar.”
Mol echoed his partner’s sentiments, calling it the greatest final they’ve ever played. “This was by far the most intense and spectacular match we’ve had against them. Cherif and Ahmed are amazing competitors, and we’ve had so many battles over the years. This one was special.”
Norwegians Continue Dominance
The victory in João Pessoa marked the Norwegians’ third consecutive title of the season, following wins in Vienna and Hamburg. It also solidified their status as one of the most dominant teams in beach volleyball history. Their ability to perform under pressure was on full display, particularly in their semifinal clash against reigning Olympic champions David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig of Sweden.
In another three-set thriller (22-20, 18-21, 15-10), Mol and Sørum ended the Swedes’ streak of six consecutive international titles, preventing them from reaching a gold medal match for the first time since last year’s Ostrava Elite16.
Åhman and Hellvig Secure Bronze
Despite falling short in the semifinals, Åhman and Hellvig bounced back to claim bronze, defeating Argentina’s Capogrosso brothers, Nicolas and Tomas, in another hard-fought match (19-21, 21-18, 15-11).
The Swedish duo has been a model of consistency in 2024, medaling in all six Beach Pro Tour events they’ve entered. Their bronze in João Pessoa added to an impressive tally of four golds and one silver this season. Overall, Åhman and Hellvig now have 20 medals in 40 Beach Pro Tour events, including 12 golds, four silvers, and four bronzes.
Looking Ahead to Rio
The Beach Pro Tour continues its Brazilian swing with another Elite16 event in Rio de Janeiro from November 6-10. The world’s top teams will once again battle for supremacy, with Mol and Sørum aiming to extend their winning streak and Åhman and Hellvig seeking to reclaim their golden form.
For beach volleyball fans, the João Pessoa Elite16 delivered unforgettable moments, showcasing the sport’s intensity, skill, and drama. As the season progresses, the competition promises to heat up even further, with the world’s best teams vying for glory on the sand.
